Mupirocin is a potent topical antibacterial agent works by killing bacteria or preventing their growth by inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to isoleucyl transfer RNA synthetase. It is primarily bacteriostatic at low concentrations, but is bactericidal in the high concentrations. Mupirocin is used as a topical treatment for bacterial skin infections (for example, boils, impetigo, folliculitis or open wounds), which are typically due to infection by Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes. It is also useful in the treatment of superficial methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections.
