Protease (also called a peptidase, proteinase, or proteolytic enzyme) is an enzyme that catalyzes proteolysis, breaking down proteins into smaller polypeptides or single amino acids, and spurring the formation of new protein products. Protease plays an important role in the digestion of food proteins into smaller peptides and performs about 20% of the digestive function. Amylase is an enzyme that catalyses the hydrolysis of starch into sugars. Amylase is present in the saliva of humans and some other mammals, where it begins the chemical process of digestion. Foods that contain large amounts of starch but little sugar, such as rice and potatoes, may acquire a slightly sweet taste as they are chewed because amylase degrades some of their starch into sugar. The pancreas and salivary gland make amylase (alpha amylase) to hydrolyse dietary starch into disaccharides and trisaccharides which are converted by other enzymes to glucose to supply the body with energy. Hemicellulase is a dietary supplement used to help break down dietary fiber, which can help improve digestion and nutrient absorption. It is often used to help treat digestive issues such as bloating, gas, and constipation. It is also used to help reduce cholesterol levels and improve gut health. Lipase is an enzyme produced in the pancreas, mouth, and stomach used for indigestion (dyspepsia), heartburn, and other gastrointestinal problems. The main function of Lipase is breakdown of fats or triglycerides into free fatty acids and glycerol. Lactase is an enzyme that helps the body to digest lactose (a sugar in milk and milk products like cheese). Some people's bodies do not make enough lactase, so they are not able to digest milk well, which can lead to diarrhea, cramps, and gas. The lactase supplement is used to prevents bloating, diarrhea and gas caused by lactose intolerance. Alpha-galactosidase reduced gas production following a meal rich in fermentable carbohydrates and may be helpful in patients with gas-related symptoms.
